Experiential Shopping Drives Retail Trends: The Pop-Up Shop

Virtuous Retail VR Surat Atosa Pop-Up Shop

Between Friday October 25th and Sunday October 27th, Surti shoppers were in for a very stylish treat: Bombay’s beloved multi-brand designer wear store Atosa traveled to Surat for VR Surat’s first-ever pop-up shop, introducing Gujarat to a host of exclusive labels never before found in the region.

The Atosa Pop-Up Shop at VR Surat was just one shining example of experiential shopping at the Center, which is quickly impacting consumer spending habits and influencing national retail trends. Located in The Arc, VR Surat’s 20,000 square-foot luxury fashion lounge, shoppers will be able to peruse the pop-up selection in a spacious and modern environment befitting international and Indian brands alike.

Speaking about her experience in Surat, Atosa’s Co-Founder Aparna Badlani said, “VR Surat is a one of a kind center in Surat. I was very impressed by not just the center but also the [other] brands that the center houses. The Atosa pop-up was very well received. As a market, Surat definitely had potential for luxury retail”.

The opening of Zara in November is another example of how VR Surat is shaping shopping habits. “We hope to target all the customers who (are) buying from Bombay or Delhi,” says Paresh Mishra, VR Director of Operations of the Western Region, “most of the buying is happening right now in Bombay, we need to shift that to Surat.”

Gujarati Film “The Good Road” Travels to The Oscars

The Good Road Gujarat VR Surat

The Film Federation of India announced The Good Road as India’s official entry to the Oscars. This special Gujarati film, which has also won a National Award, is a lost-and-found story of a little boy.

Starring actors Sonali Kulkarni, Poonam Kesar Singh, Ajay Gehi, Keval Katrodia, Shamji Dhana Kerasia and Priyank Upadhyay, The Good Road was a surprise choice, as many film critics expected The Lunchbox to go to the illustrious film festival.

Director Gyan Correa teamed up with local people like a truck driver to make his documentary-style road drama and said the selection is only the beginning of a journey. “It’s fabulous that The Good Road has been nominated for the Oscars and I congratulate each and every member of the film,” Correa told The Hollywood Reporter. The Good Road sound designer Resul Pookutty is no stranger to The Oscars, he previously won a statue for his work on Slumdog Millionaire.

The 86th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2014. Until then, here are a few little-known-facts about The Good Road from NDTV

  1. This is the first time a Gujarati endeavour has been nominated by India for the Oscars.
  2. The Good Road marks Gyan Correa’s directorial debut. He is known for his work in the ad world. He’s a Goan who doesn’t speak Gujarati.
  3. Ajay Gehi took a two-month course to get the language right. He has never worked in a Gujarati film before.
  4. The Good Road is financed and supported by the National Film Development Corp. NFDC is one of the co-producers of other frontrunners, The Lunchbox and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

We continue to celebrate Indian film and 100 Years of Indian Cinema with Surat Hua Filmy. Stay tuned for a few of our favorite Bollywood films and fashion from the last century, coming soon.

Raghav Sachar Takes Garba Global

Navratri is one of the biggest and most joyous festivals in Gujarat and the celebrations at VR Surat will be just as momentous. We caught up with one of Glam Garba‘s lead performers, Raghav Sachar, to talk about Navratri, Surat and the power of music.

Global Garba

“Navratri, as a festival, is growing by leaps and bounds every year. Garba is the spirit of Navratri but we are trying to create something with a fresh appeal. We want to take the root of garba and make it more global, to use this festival as a bridge between various communities of the world and Surat as a global city.”

Musical Fusion

“I play 33 instruments, most of which are western. The traditional garba music has a lot of boundaries, it is not free flowing music. I am trying to fuse instruments like saxophone and flute into the traditional garba music, which has never been done before. We want to make it a festival that carries the spirit of garba a step further by expanding it into various different forms of music. Imagine Brazilian or Latin music mixed with garba beats, it’s never been done before. For Club Garba, we are exploring genres like EDM, dubstep and breakbeats to be put in a garba setting and create new flavors for people to dance on.”

Fostering Community

VR Surat is so community savvy, I have performed at a lot of malls all over the country and I have to say, they’re missing the concept of community living. At VR Surat, people from all walks of life can come in, have a brilliant time, enjoy themselves, see a concert live at the festival park and eat different kinds of food at various places.

Rocking Surat

“When I was there for the opening, it was fabulous. I could see people who have houses in and around VR Surat, especially the festival park and they were trying to see the performance from wherever they were. The people at the venue also had a real blast. We had a dance floor in the middle and there was a rock concert kind of feel going on there. That is what community living is all about.”

The Power of Music

“Music binds people across diverse cultures and religions and provides  great opportunities for participation in community life through festivals, musical concerts, events and performances,” says Glam Garba artist Jankee.  “I am very excited about my performance at VR Surat. I will be rendering a lot of traditional garbas and dandiya songs, fusing it with the latest hits of Bollywood.”

Festive Fashion Style Tips for Navratri

Take a fresh approach to fashion this festive season with these Top 5 Tips for Navratri from Pearl Shah, the stylist behind our exciting Glam Garba campaign.

1. Colour Block – it’s a never fail trend. Layer bright festive colours or look for pieces with a bold patch detail in a solid colour.

2. Play it Smart – instead of picking up a heavy mirror-work ghagra, try a crushed maxi skirt like the ones from Westside. Keep things busy on top by teaming it with a heavily embellished backless choli so you can dance the night away without feeling weighed down by your ensemble.

3. Go Short – crop tops are the new choli. Embellished crop tees available at all high street stores will work fabulously with ethnic print skirts and pants. You could also add on a silver chain belt if you feel like going casual in jeans.

4. Creative Contrast -boys make your bright kurtas a notch ‘cooler’ by layering them with a contrast colour tee. This works just like a t-shirt that you would wear under your corporate shirt and keeps the look quite young.

5. Accessorizing is Everything – chuck away clunky chandeliers and a zillion heavy bangles, replace them with the very trendy ear cuffs and hand harness (new speak for haath-phools).
